EDITORIAL | A Touch Of Dark

Papercut Magazine drives photographers to extreme heights. This collaboration between illustrator Michael Ezzell and photographer Christopher Hench came out pretty good. The unusual accessories like the blue fluffy boa and hardware with a capital 'H' give the model some toughness. I love the illustrated geometrical forms. They blend in the photographs like they were there first and the photographs were inspired by them. One of the best creative collaborations that fit fantastically in art world. See all photos yourself in this miniature version of Papercut Magazine.

YES PLEASE | Alexander McQueen heels

Oh yes, I am completely aware of the fact my wishlist goggles from shoes. Shoes are the only products I can buy without feeling guilty, because you never ever have enough of them. At this point, I really lack a pair of great black heels, so I have nothing to be ashamed of! These graphically influenced ones are from Alexander McQueen, and you've spot them here before. They only cost a fortune (my year salary) so I must enjoy these from a distance. Quite a distance.

BRAND | Bjørg

Jewelry label Bjørg is found by Bjørg Nordli-Mathisen, an nomadic woman who began making one-of-a-kind jewelry whilst living in India since 2004. The result is a creative and unique collection, over and over again. The 2012 lookbook consists of mythology and tales-based shots, as an odyssey of imagination and mystery. Or, in her words: 'Combining fragile and organic structures with an aesthetic influenced by futurism and geometry, the collection sets to blend ancient tales with modern mythologies of sci-fi and their futuristic imagery; invoking concepts like timetravel, parallel universes and space distortion'.

All pieces are handmade, and contain natural materials such as horse hair, crystals and feathers. My favourite pieces of the collection are the earcuffs in black and white. They remind me of movies like Troy, with drapery white dresses and Greek-inspired hairdo's. The earcuffs emit belligerence, I could see a warrior wear them in the heat of the battle. The rosegold and the off-white hairs, they complete each other in their contrasts. Other favourites are the Holy Smoke ring and golden claw. The first one is just so well-thought. It is a classic piece, but with a modern sauce. For me, this is the ultimatum of jewelry design.

Sieradenontwerpers Pamela Love en ManiaMania, eat your heart out.

DOSSIER | Fresh Face Emily Ruhl

An unusual appearance. Long, blonde hair, but a masculine strong look. The power lays in her eyes. Emily Ruhl is one of the 'developing' projects of Marilyn Models, which coaches several established names such as Adriana Lima, Ashley Smith, Eniko and Tallulah. The pressure is high, if you get noticed, you could become a real big name. Emily Ruhl is an alienating model, with hair that reflects some sort of blue glance, and eyes that sneak upon you in the dark. She is the queen of ice, she's got the baby blues. Shortly: she fits the scene at the moment. Read this little interview she did with Nina Charlie.

How did you get into the modeling business?
I went to the shows at New York Fashion Week for my 14th birthday, and met my mother agent (Chantale Nadeau) there. We corresponded over email after meeting, and within a month I was signed to a summer contract with Bravo in Tokyo. I was 13 at the time I was scouted, and my life was changed forever. It was the best birthday present I have ever gotten!

How would you describe your personal style?
Fashion forward, yet effortlessly chic.

Who are your favorite fashion designers?
I adore Alexander Wang, Alexander McQueen, Isabel Marant, Chanel, Dolce and Gabbana, Marc Jacobs, Rodarte, Stella McCartney, Helmut Lang, Acne, Peter Dundas for Emilio Pucci, Calvin Klein, and Prabal Gurung. There are so many I love, that it is hard to choose my favorites!

What is your most prized possession?
I have a bunch of old black and white family photos from many past generations. They hold special memories and show me those I never knew. Whenever I get an apartment, I want to have them framed and all put on the walls to remind me of those I love.

Who are your role models?
My parents, Karlie Kloss and Benjamin Franklin. It is a bit of a strange mix, but I would love to have qualities of each!

How would you describe yourself in three words?
Beyond her years.

How would you like to change the world?
I would like to show the world that a woman can have a wonderful family and a career at the same time. I would also like to contribute to the efforts in educating the children of the world.

EDITORIAL | Handpainted flowers

In the new category Quote, you'll find a sneak peek of the editorial shown on Wednesday. The combination between fine black and white photography and hand-painted flowers did the trick. It is fine versus raw, modern versus old-fashioned. The painter searches for the borders of the photographer, by painting over the face of the model, for example. The clothes are subordinate to the arty feeling. An editorial that doesn't fit in the ordinary magazine, that is where my heart goes out to.

DESIGN | Mixing up concrete

Concrete never fails to amaze me. The material goes so well with anything opposite of the raw, unpolished, adamant. In my opinion, AllesWirdGut Architektur has done a fine job converting this abandoned steel mill into a public park, but without removing the original character. "The disused industrial site´s atmosphere was characterized by wideness and roughness as well as pioneer plants such as mosses and birch. The former situation is necessarily literally covered by the new use and new design. Our major goal was it to let the now hidden qualities shine through the redesign," as they stated. My favourite part is the 'tunnel' that does it's job as couch. In total, the parc has the tough outside that would suit a city as Berlin, with the concrete to skateboard on. On the other hand, the new green between the grey mass, the light wood and the air of freshness makes this combination a successful one.

Meet Lucy Chadwick, the amazing Lucy Chadwick. Living with someone who calls themselves officially 'Duffy', she must be an artist. Lucy is the director of certain galleries in London and New York, and shows us around in this short film for Zara. All items shown are bestsellers, like the blouse with golden tips and the knitted burgundy sweater. Lucy is an interesting person, with her morning rituals and nature-loving attitude. Her laid-back character and je-ne-sais-quoi, even though she really isn't French, is to envy her for. Even if you'd try, you would have never guesses the Selby shot this film. He did it before, also an heartwarming story about the people behind a biological tacoshop. I think this is a perfect example of a futuristic collaboration. This film has brought an photographer/cameraman, an artist and a label together, who sponsored it all. Whether you like it or not, art and fashion are being seduced by the commercial world even before Warhol. With Zara's runway shows replaced by this sort of movies, I keep it zipped.

NEW IN | H&M

These are some of my new buys from Amsterdam, a few days ago. I bought the black version of the fluffy pink sweater I already own, because I love the warmness and softness it creates without itching! I was happily surprised when I saw that the BIB-necklace had not already sold out. This necklace was on top of my wishlist, and finally mine. The choker-effect fits perfectly with one of my blouses or cropped sweaters. The stupid thing was that I refused buying anything at H&M, because of the saturday-effect. Stuffed fitting rooms, clothing everywhere, irritated salesmen, you know. But when I couldn't succeed at Zara's, River Island and many other stores, the H&M was sort of my last post. And you see the results!

PARTY | UITagenda

This is a list with parties for the upcoming weekend. Because all of these parties are in the Netherlands and surrounding, the diary is in Dutch. If you are interested in one of the clubs above, I will translate the text to English.

MY FAVOURITES | Blogs: Mode Rosa

Blogger Mode Rosa, aka Roos, had already made her entrance on FreshFix using the backdoor. She appeared in the Toplooks of October, in which I glorified her dare to cut her hair short. Of course, her hairdo wasn't the factor that got her to Toplooks. It is her class, her sense of inexhaustible style. It is the black she uses, it is in the outfits that I am able to wear as well. She spices up the office look by adding a hint of fur, of minimalistic jewelry. All of that, combined with the cropped hair and the doll-face with pink lips got me into an obsession. Roos is actually a stylist-to-be, and that shows in her effortless outfits. She mostly blogs personal outfitpictures, but also inspiration for her study and the interior of her home. There is no special added value in Mode Rosa, it is just another outfitblog. But, without being excessive, she doesn't really need those frills. Roos is just roos, and she is damn good in it.

Oh well, for the ones that have been guessing where the 'Monday, Filmday' has gone: have no worries. Because of a short business-film I'm editing at the moment, moving frames have only caught my intention if I could mix them into my film. For the facebook-movie, the whole office went upside-down. My colleagues were folding paper airplanes, to throw them in the field - slowmotion of course. It was a messed up situation, but it yields great shots. Nevertheless, I'm too busy editing for strolling along the web, but I couldn't leave you empty handed. Therefor, here is an amazing editorial which I already had saved for times like these. It seems that everyone here in Holland grabs for the sweaters in grey, greyer and greyest. This shoot shows that a pop of colour can cause great contrasts between the wintery ambiance and the bloody red for example. You may buy anything this week, but it must contain colour. That is an heavy challenge for me!

ART | Twisted architecture

Check the work of Nicholas Kennedy Sitton on his tumblr or flickr. He withdraws pictures so that the earth shakes and the pieces all fall together - twisted. He is applying the same technique on portraits now as well, but I prefer the rareness of twisted concrete rather than a twisted person. We already have too many twisted persons on this planet. Twisting buildings like a rubic's cube, it produces completely new forms of futuristic architecture and inspiration.
