Jewelry label Bjørg is found by Bjørg Nordli-Mathisen, an nomadic woman who began making one-of-a-kind jewelry whilst living in India since 2004. The result is a creative and unique collection, over and over again. The 2012 lookbook consists of mythology and tales-based shots, as an odyssey of imagination and mystery. Or, in her words: 'Combining fragile and organic structures with an aesthetic influenced by futurism and geometry, the collection sets to blend ancient tales with modern mythologies of sci-fi and their futuristic imagery; invoking concepts like timetravel, parallel universes and space distortion'.
All pieces are handmade, and contain natural materials such as horse hair, crystals and feathers. My favourite pieces of the collection are the earcuffs in black and white. They remind me of movies like Troy, with drapery white dresses and Greek-inspired hairdo's. The earcuffs emit belligerence, I could see a warrior wear them in the heat of the battle. The rosegold and the off-white hairs, they complete each other in their contrasts. Other favourites are the Holy Smoke ring and golden claw. The first one is just so well-thought. It is a classic piece, but with a modern sauce. For me, this is the ultimatum of jewelry design.
Sieradenontwerpers Pamela Love en ManiaMania, eat your heart out. Sinds 2004 versiert een flinke concurrent menig hand en nek. Jewelrybrand Bjørg zet zichzelf ijzersterk neer in een filmpje dat op het eerste oog vrij weinig met sieraden te maken heeft. Het vervreemdende shot met de 'burning man' middenin een woestijn, de emotieloze handeling en de wind die de toon zet; een filmpje om je hersens over te kraken. Besteed er niet teveel denkwerk aan, je kunt je veel beter vergapen aan al het moois dat het merk te bieden heeft.
De nieuwe collectie is gebaseerd op mythologie en fantasie, een ode aan mysterie. Bjørg combineert fragiele materialen als paardenhaar met futuristische en geometrische vormen en materialen. Begrippen als tijdreizen en parallelle universums zijn door de collectie doorweven, met een knipoog naar de Griekse tijd. Alle sieraden zijn handgemaakt en ontzettend schaars. De collectie bevat alleen maar moois, maar een aantal designs springen er qua briljantie uit. Zo is the Holy Smoke ring een fantastische belichaming van de klassieke langen sigarettenhouder die in menig jaren '50-film een glansrol speelde. Daarnaast zijn de tooien van zwart en beige paardenhaar niet te missen. De earcuffs zouden niet misstaan op één van de helden uit Troy, om die blote basten een beetje cachet te geven. Een vent met elvenoren moet ook wel kunnen wennen aan deze manen!
